Let me preface this blog post by saying that there are many qualified pet sitters listed on Rover and Wag. What is of greatest concern to me is the number of animal abuse incidents that have been reported by the media for Rover and Wag sitters/walkers since the companies inception. Go to a search engine and search for the key words “Rover animal abuse” or “Wag animal abuse”. It will bring tears to your eyes.
I will not stand on a soapbox and tell you not to use these companies. Instead, I want to highly stress how critical it is to understand the difference between the way these online companies qualify and train their pet care providers vs. the way a professional pet sitting company does. The difference starts with the experience and belief system of the owner/founder of the company. Start your search for the best pet care provider partner by learning about the person who started the company. From there, research their qualifications, certifications and training as well as their team’s. Put the owner’s name, in quotes, into a Google search and see what comes up. Any hidden skeletons? Search several pages deep to see what you can learn.
At It Takes a Village Pet Care, we are dedicated to the communities we live in and to giving back. You will see this throughout our website. In addition, our job application asks for volunteer work history as well as work history. If a job applicant has no volunteer history, they will not receive an interview from us.
Our 33+ 5-star reviews on Facebook speaks volumes. We are also proud to boast that we employ three of our customers. They love our business model and service for their own pets and decided to apply and are now members of our team.
What is the best way to find the right pet care provider for you? Ask friends, neighbors and co-workers who they recommend. Read reviews on Facebook and search engines since these can only be written and submitted by the actual pet owner and not an employee of the company. You should also interview the owner/founder, have them meet your pet(s) and ask for references. You can also search for professional pet sitters on reliable websites such as Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters.
Please share your feedback and experiences below. Tell us about the professional pet care provider you use and what makes them great!
